SCREAMING EAGLES CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 10TH STRAIGHT WIN, TOPPING COOPER UNION ON DIG PINK NIGHT
Posted on October 26, 2012

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Saint Elizabeth ran its win streak to 10 straight matches, concluding the 2012 regular season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Cooper Union Friday in St. Joseph’s Hall on Dig Pink Night.
With season-high 13 players seeing action, the Screaming Eagles (22-7) officially won by scores 25-10, 25-13, 25-15 to close out the 2012 regular season.
The Screaming Eagles held its annual Dig Pink game and wore pink warm up T-shirts and pink hair ribbons to honor those women who have fought breast cancer. The program again held a raffle and collected over $50 in donations that will go toward research and awareness of this disease.
CSE was jazzed up from the first serve, racing out to a 10-2 lead after sophomore Rachel Hausler served up three aces. The lead now at 17-7, two aces by senior Nashlly Sokoli and a Kareemah Muhammad kill ignited another CSE run, pushing the lead to 20-7. Katie Cooper transitioned from a dig into an attack that found the floor for a kill and the set point, 25-10.
The Screaming Eagles raced out to a 7-0 lead in the second set after three aces by sophomore Jenae Goodson. A big kill in the middle of the floor by Subhana Wrights pushed the lead to 10-1. With the score 15-4, freshman Amanda Inacio served up an ace and a few points later another kill came from outside hitter Muhammad to push the lead to 20-6. CSE would not look back, closing out the second set, 25-13.
The third set started out with another flurry of offense by CSE and the results was a 10-1 lead. Muhammad put down three kills in the middle of the set and the Screaming Eagles raced out to the 18-7 advantage. The loudest cheer of the night came when junior middle hitter Laura Patterson put down her first kill of the year for a 19-7 CSE lead. The Screaming Eagles held off a late Cooper Union rally and closed out the third set – 25-15 – for the tenth straight win of the year.
Wrights led the CSE offense with eight kills while Muhammad contributed four kills of her own as well as a game-high five aces. Hausler led the defense with seven digs to go along with three aces while Goodson, playing her second match at setter, handed out 15 assists with three aces.
Concluding the best season in program history, Saint Elizabeth will await word of a possible bid the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament. That information is expected to be released around Nov. 6.

SAINT ELIZABETH OVERCOMES GOTHIC KNIGHT MATCH POINT, OUTLASTS NJCU, 3-2
JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University held match point in the fourth set, but the College of Saint Elizabeth overcame the deficit and survived a Gothic Knight rally in the fifth game to defeat NJCU, 3-2 (13-24, 26-24, 14-25, 26-24, 15-11) in a non-conference match played on October 23 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
In the second meeting of the season between the clubs, the Screaming Eagles (21-7) won consecutive matches against NJCU (9-19) for the first time since winning three straight matches in the 1988, 1989 and 1990 seasons. NJCU leads the all-time series, 25-8; CSE swept an October 13 meeting between the clubs in Morristown, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20.
CSE came into the match without their starting setter and leader in aces per set Amy Cooper due to a non-sport related injury a mere 3 hours before the start of the match. The Eagles won their 21st match of the season despite committing nine more attack errors (33) than kills (24), but managed to survive by using its clear size advantage to reject 11.0 total blocks. NJCU had 37 kills, 16 aces and 6.0 blocks in defeat, losing for the first time in five sets this season.
St. Elizabeth hit -.077 for the match and had a red percentage in four of five sets. But the Eagles received solid defense in the backrow and at the net. It was the second time this season NJCU held an opponent to a negative attack percentage and the first time in 11 years that NJCU has lost a match when the opponent had a negative hitting percentage (October 6, 2001 vs. Montclair State University, -.036).
Sophomore libero Rachel Hausler (Lebanon Township, NJ/Voorhees) tallied a match-best 18 digs and equaled the night high with six aces. Junior Subhana Wrights (Lawrence Township, NJ/Lawrence), the 6-foot-1 middle, was key at the net with eight blocks, including three solo stuffs.
Sophomore 6-foot-0 opposite Ireyah Stevens (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) collected six assisted blocks and three kills. Sophomore setter Jenae Goodson (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) finished with 14 assists, eight digs and two aces to overcome seven ball handling errors. Also for CSE, sophomore outside hitter Katie Cooper (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had 12 digs and six kills and senior defensive specialist Nashlly Sokoli (Newark, NJ/St. Vincent's Academy) finished with 11 digs.
NJCU dominated the first set, leading from start to finish while hitting .240 as a team with nine winners. CSE hit -.087 in the period. The Knights burst out to a 15-6 lead behind Scarpa who hit .300 in the game and the Eagles could not recover.
The second and fourth sets saw NJCU bouncing back from deficits and each time falling in extra points by a 26-24 result. In game two, both teams had a negative percentage (-.100, NJCU; -.115, CSE) and there were seven ties and three lead changes. Tied at 21-21, CSE twice gained two-point leads at 23-21 and 24-22. NJCU tied it on an opponent attack error and a Martinez ace at 24-24, before sophomore middle Kiara Francisco (Newark, NJ/Marylawn of the Oranges), who had
a block for the 23rd point, landed a kill for the 25th point and NJCU committed an attack error on set point.
Another dominant third set gave NJCU a 2-1 lead in the match. The Knights owned a 2:1 margin in kills, 12-6, and hit .250 in the game (12-4-32). Tied at 4-4, NJCU scored six straight points behind the serving of Stevenson and opened up a 17-9 advantage that CSE could not overcome.
In the fourth set each team again hit in the red, but NJCU clawed back from a huge 18-11 deficit, scoring six consecutive points behind the serving of Martinez, including back-to-back aces to pull within one, 18-17. CSE reopened a 21-17 cushion after a kill by Goodson and a combo block by Stevens and Francisco, who had three blocks on the night. Another double block by Stevens and Wright made it 23-20.
The Knights reeled off four consecutive points to vault ahead, 24-23 as CSE committed an attack error, Medley floored a kill, and NJCU tied it on a double block by Martinezand Hatcher. For Martinez, who had most of the contact on the stuff, it was only her third block of the season. Garcia then unleashed a kill for a 24-23 lead to give NJCU match point. But after a CSE timeout, the Eagles scrambled off an out-of-system play that tempted the Knights into a crucial blocking error on set point as CSE survived, 26-24, to force a fifth set.Goodson hit .800 in the fourth period with four kills (4-0-5).
The Knights started the fifth set ice cold and the Eagles capitalized—never trailing in the game. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-1 advantage as NJCU committed four straight attack errors and six in the first eight points. The Knights were able to whittle the deficit to 9-6 on a kill from Hatcher, and after the guests reclaimed a 12-7 behind the serving of Hausler and Sokolli, the Eagles had reestablished the five-point edge. NJCU continued to fight back, drawing within one, 12-11, after three straight attack errors from the Eagles. But after a CSE timeout, Cooper floored a kill and NJCU committed back-to-back attack miscues, its ninth and 10th of the period, as CSE escaped, 15-11.
CSE extended its winning streak to a record high 9 wins and a program best 21 wins. The Eagles will host The Cooper Union in their final home match of this season this Friday, October 26th, at 7pm in St. Joseph's Hall as part of CSE's Dig Pink event.

CSE UPSETS SUNY IT TO GO PERFECT 3-0 IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Saint Elizabeth took on the #4 seed SUNY IT needing a win to
have any chance of making the NEAC playoffs. The Eagles played their best match of the weekend in route
to an upset win over SUNY IT 25-20,25-20,25-19.
Set 1 was a back and forth affair with both teams trading
points and not being able to take command of the set. Deadlocked at 11,
the Eagles benefited from a couple of Wildcat errors and a Katie Cooper
kill to open a 3 point lead at 14-11.
Both teams traded points for most of the set and the Eagles found
themselves up by the same 3 point cushion late in the set at 20-17. A Subhana Wrights kill sandwiched
between 2 Kareemah Muhammad’s kills and a key block by Amy Cooper and Kiara
Francisco helped CSE close out set 1 on a 5-3 run that gave them a 25-20 set
win.
The Eagles and the Wildcats wrote a similar script in set 2
early on. Although the Eagles
jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, SUNY IT took the lead at 5-4 before a Subhana
Wrights kill tied the score again.
That kill sparked a 4 kill outburst by Saint Elizabeth, three by
Kareemah Muhammad and 1 by Ireyah Stevens, to give the Eagles a 10-6. A Katie Cooper kill and an Amy Cooper
ace extended the Eagle lead to 6 at 17-11. SUNY IT fought back to within 2 at 18-16 but an attack error
out of the right side helped the Eagles go back on top by 20-17. Jenae Goodson stepped up and hit for an
ace as teammates Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammad added key kills in a 5-3
run to close out the set 25-20.
Looking to end the match in 3 and earn their 20th
win of the season, Saint Elizabeth
started out putting pressure on the Wildcats from the onset of set 3. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead as
Subhana Wrights pounded out 3 kills in the run. CSE extended the lead to 12-3 as Jenae Goodson slammed down
2 aces and Amy Cooper, Kareemah Muhammad and Subhana Wrights pounded out kills
out of the front row. Saint
Elizabeth continued to pour it on as the squad extended the lead to 18-10,
punctuated by an Ireyah Stevens and Kiara Francisco block. After a Katie Cooper kill, the Eagles
saw themselves within 5 points of a major victory at 20-15. The teams traded points from that point
forth, with the Eagles getting 2 kills from Kareemah Muhammad, and 1 kill from
sisters Amy Cooper and Katie Cooper to complete the victory 25-19.
Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammad combined for 33 kills
and a .250 hitting percentage to lead the Eagle offense. Rachel Hausler had 20 digs and perfect
100% serve receive percentage to start the CSE offense. Jenae Goodson paced the Eagles yet
again from the service line with 4 aces and teammate Nashlly Sokoli added 2 as
these 2 defensive specialists led the team again in aces. Amy Cooper ran a balanced offense
again, setting up 32 kills and adding 4 kills and 10 digs. Sister Katie Cooper added 7 kills and
had 15 digs in the win.
Saint Elizabeth earned their 6th victory in the
NEAC to finish over .500 for the first time in its history in the
conference. CSE also hit the 20
victory mark for the first time ever and extend their winning streak to a
season and program history high 8 wins.
The Eagles continue their road trip on Tuesday, October 23rd
at 7pm at the home of the Gothic Knights in the back end of a home and home
matchup in which the Eagles won the first leg at home.
CSE SOARS PAST EXPRESS FOR 19TH WIN
Saint Elizabeth picked up its record setting 19th
win, raised their record to 5W-5L in the NEAC and extended their winning streak
to 7 games, best in program history, with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-21 victory over
the Wells College Express.
The Eagles pounded out 27 kills for the match and were in
control from the onset of each set.
Subhana Wrights and Katie Cooper led the team with 19 kills as the team
relied on their efficiency to stymie repeated Wells College runs (Wrights .375,
Cooper .200).
From the service line, the duo of Jenae Goodson and Nashly
Sokoli led the Eagles with 7 of the team’s 11 aces while Rachel Hausler and Amy
Cooper had 10 digs each defensively and Amy led a balanced offense with 23
assists.
The Eagles take on the Wildcats of SUNY IT in their last
match of the day at Lancaster Bible College as the squad tries to extend their
winning streak to 8 games and also push their record setting NEAC wins record
to 6.
SCREAMING EAGLES TAME MUSTANGS FOR 18TH WIN
Saint Elizabeth won their 18th match of the
season, their 4th NEAC win, in a 25-17, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25 victory
vs. the Mustangs of Morrisville State.
CSE and Morrisville were locked in a tight contest early on
with both offenses being very efficient (10-10). A Katie Cooper kill stopped a minor Mustang run that put the
Eagles within 3 at 11-14 and started a 10-1 run (21-15) for Saint Elizabeth
that turned the set in the Eagles favor.
Three Jenae Goodson aces and 2 Subhana Wrights’ kills fueled the run
that led to the 25-17 set win.
The second set started off much like the first with both
teams unable to get the edge on the other (11-11). Yet again, the Mustangs went on a mini run that gave
Morrisville a small lead at 15-13.
A Kiara Francisco block and a key Kareemah Muhammad kill got the Eagles
even at 19 all and sparked a late run by CSE that put the Eagles in a position
to win the set. Morrisville made a
late run to tie the score at 24 all but a key hitting errors out of the right
side by Morrisville gave the set
to CSE at 26-24.
CSE had the victory within its grasp in set 3 as the Eagles
raced off to a 10-4 lead behind the serving of Amy Cooper, a kill by Kareemah
Muhammad and an Amy Cooper and Ireyah Stevens block. But the serving game faltered in the middle part of the set
and it allowed the Mustangs to go on a 13-4 run that gave Morrisville a 17-14
lead. Although kills by Kiara
Francisco and Subhana Wrights kept the Eagles close (19-18), key kills by
Morrisville down the stretch was the difference in a 22-25 CSE set loss.
The 4th set saw the Eagles race out to an 11-5
lead thanks to the defensive presence of Subhana Wrights at the net and
Kareemah Muhammad’s offense.
Although the Mustangs made several runs at the Eagles, the 4th set belonged to
Katie Cooper and Subhnana Wrights who stemmed each run with key kills and
blocks. After the Eagles built
their lead to 23-17, the Mustangs cut the lead down to 3 (23-20) after an Eagle
blocking error, an ace and a right side kill but a key Subhana Wrights block
–her 5th of the match- cut the rally short and after a Kareemah
Muhammad kill the set and match were over at 25-20.

The Maccabees started off successfully attacking the Eagles out of the middle and took an 11-10 lead nearing the midpoint of the match. After a block and a kill by Subhana Wrights and a Katie Cooper ace, CSE took control back of the match at 13-11. After a Maccabee timeout, the Eagles went on a 12-4 run to close out the set easily at 25-14.
The Eagles started the 2nd set off on a 13-1 run behind 4 kills by Katie Cooper, 2 aces by sister Amy Cooper and 2 kills and 2 blocks by Subhana Wrights. Yeshiva University could not recover and the Eagles raced on to a 25-10 set win.
The 3rd set was more of the same for the Eagles as the Saint Elizabeth defense and offense were working seamlessly to open up an 11-3 score to start the match. Kills by 4 different players and 2 more aces by Katie Cooper fueled this run. Misato Oya got her first 2 kills of the season and Amanda Inacio hit for her first ace of the season in the back end of the set as multiple players helped in closing the set 25-15.
Katie Cooper led the squad with 15 kills, hit for 5 aces and 4 digs. Subhana Wrights hit for an astounding .817 with 10 kills out of 11 attempts and added 3 blocks (2 solo). Kiara Francisco continued her recent hot streak with 4 kills out of 6 attempts. Amy Cooper dished out 30 assists and added a team leading 6 aces and 10 digs.

SCREAMING EAGLES SWEEP 2 IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCHUPS
MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Saint Elizabeth middle hitter Subhana Wrights had 16 kills while outside hitter Katie Cooper added 14 kills as the Eagles swept both New Jersey City University and Medgar Evers in women’s volleyball action on Saturday to tie for the program record for wins in season.
Saint Elizabeth (16-7, 3-5 NEAC) won the first match with scores of 25-17, 25-23, and 25-20. In the second match of the day, the Eagles swept Medgar Evers in three sets with scores of 25-9, 25-8, and 25-7 to improve to run its current win streak to four games.
The Screaming Eagles won 16 matches in 2011 to set the program mark and with another impressive campaign this year, tied that mark on Saturday.
In the morning match against NJCU, Saint Elizabeth went up 6-1 after sophomore Katie Cooper served up an ace in this weekend’s first set against New Jersey City University. NJCU (5-15, 0-6 NJAC) rallied back to make it 13-10 but Katie Cooper responded with a kill to end the rally. Rachel Hausler served up two big aces putting the Eagles up 18-12. The Knights were unable to counter, and CSE outside hitter Kareemah Muhammad had an ace to close out the set 25-17.
NJCU got a quick lead on the Eagles in the second set going up 4-1 before Katie Cooper’s serving rallied the Eagles who went up 5-4. After a long battle going back and forth for points, Knights sophomore Jade Medley tied the set 17-17. Despite best efforts, the Knights tried to fight back to keep the match close but fell to CSE 25-23 on a final kill from Screaming Eagles junior Amy Cooper.
Wrights had a big kill that lead to an early rally putting the Eagles up 8-6. The Eagles maintained the lead by one or two points until a Kiara Francisco kill put the Eagles up by four, 19-15. Katie Cooper’s two kills brought the Eagles within one point of the victory but NJCU served up two points making it 24-20 to capitalize on Saint Elizabeth errors. Wrights finished out the entire match with a kill as CSE won the third set, 25-20.
The Screaming Eagles came out with a strong start in its afternoon match with visiting Medgar Evers.
The Eagles took an early lead in the first set going on 9-5 run. Jenae Goodson led the Eagles as she served 10 consecutive points for a 20-5 lead. There was no turning back for the Eagles as they closed out the set 25-9.
In the second set, Hausler tallied three serving aces which got the Eagles up 6-2. The Eagles continued the run as Misato Oya served up four points to keep the 18-6 lead. Amy Cooper finished out the set with the last six serves and Saint Elizabeth cruised to the 25-8 set win.
Medgar Evers started out the third set keeping the Eagles within one point for the first five points. Wrights took over with two kills to give the Eagles the 9-4 lead. Saint Elizabeth went on a 7-0 run from Taisha Colon’s serving and strong Eagle offense. The Cougars could not get into rhythm offensively. Wrights closed out the final set 25-7.
Saint Elizabeth hit an astounding .417 (a season-best) for the match (22 kills, two errors on 48 attempts) with Wrights setting the game-high at seven kills. The Cooper sisters combined for 10 kills and just one error (Amy and Katie both had five kills).
The Screaming Eagles posted 14 aces from the service line, including the first ace of the season by sophomore Alyssa Moscova.
The Screaming Eagles next home game will be Senior Night on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against Yeshiva University where the athletic department will honor three seniors: Misato Oya, Zuleima Molina and Nashlly Sokoli. The celebration will take place before the match. The first serve is at 7:30 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Hall.

EAGLES DISPATCH DOLPHINS IN 4 FOR 14TH WIN
Saint Elizabeth took on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a non-conference match-up as the Eagles looked to right themselves after a tough 1W-3L performance during the 2nd conference weekend of the year this past weekend.
The first set proved to be a comedy of errors for the Eagles as uncharacteristic errors of all types (10 of them) plagued Saint Elizabeth which allowed the Dolphins to take a 17-13 past the midpoint of the set. A couple of kills by Katie Cooper and another by Ireyah Stevens coupled with an Amy Cooper ace brought the Eagles back to an 18-18 tie late in the set. At 20-20, a costly service error by the Dolphins gave Saint Elizabeth the opening they needed as Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights hit for two kills in a 4-2 run that sealed the set for CSE, 25-22. Although the Eagles committed 14 errors in the set, their .233 hitting % saved the set as Saint Elizabeth hit for 12 kills, led by Katie Cooper's 5 kills.
The 2nd set started a bit more evenly and with less errors by both sides. Staten Island jumped out to a 15-10 lead however as the Eagles hit for 3 consecutive hitting errors nearing the midway point of the set. Another service error by the Dolphins opened the door for Saint Elizabeth and 3 SubhanaWright's kills later, the Eagles had crawled back to within 3 at 14-17. CSE got as close as 1 at 23-24 as the Dolphins had 3 consecutive hitting errors but a left-side kill put an end to the set for the Eagles as CSI earned a 25-23 set win. The Eagles hit for .200 and 11 kills in the set led by Subhana Wrights' 5 kills but it was not enough to overcome the Dolphin attack.
The 3rd set proved to be the turning point of the match. The Eagles hit for 11 kills at a .207 clip but the offense was balanced as Saint Elizabeth got 4 kills apiece from Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights. The Eagles were also able to draw aces from 4 rotations and got 9 perfect digs from Rachel Hausler to stymie the Dolphin offense. Saint Elizabeth turned a 3-3 tie early on into a rout as the Eagles went on an 11-3 run sparked by Wrights and K. Cooper that ended any hope for the Dolphins in the set. Eagles finished the set off with a kill by Amy Cooper to give CSE a 25-16 win.
The 4th set was by far the worst hitting set for CSE as the team only managed 8 kills (.038) but a stifling defense that yielded 4 blocks, a 2.27 pass rating -2.42 by Rachel Hausler- and a set high 18 digs proved to be more than enough to shut down the Dolphin offense that was held to 3 kills and 1 block in the set. Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammad struck for 6 kills combined but it was the blocking of Wrights -4 blocks in the set- that turned the set decisively around and kept Staten Island at bay, never allowing the Dolphins to be within 4 points of CSE as the Eagles easily won the set and match 25-15 for their 14th win of the year.
The Eagles struck for 42 kills, 10 aces, 61 digs and 8 blocks to pace a balanced win for the team. Subhana Wrights led the offense with 15 kills and a .393 hitting % while the passing trio of Rachel Hausler, Katie Cooper and Misato Oya gave up only 1 ace the entire match to kickstart the Eagle offense. Rachel Hausler led the team with a perfect 43/43 serve receptions and a 2.39 pass rating. Amy Cooper had 18 digs to lead the squad and dished out 34 assists.
The Eagles take on the New Jersey City Gothic Knights at 11am and the Medgar Evers Cougars at 3pm, Saturday, October 13th at St. Joseph's Hall looking for their 15th and 16th wins of the season!

EAGLES DOMINANT EARLY, HANG ON TO BEAT LIONS OF PS HARRISBURGH
Saint Elizabeth was looking to rebound from a sound defeat
at the hands of Gallaudet as they took on the Lions of PS Harrisburgh in the
last match of the day for CSE. CSE
was also trying to break the longest losing streak (3 matches) of the season
for the squad.
Saint Elizabeth jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind 2 aces by
Amy Cooper and a Kiara Francisco kill and maintained that cushion early on as a
kill by Subhana Wrights gave the Eagles an 8-5 lead. Although the Lions would
close to one, a Wrights kill and a
passing error gave the Eagles control again at 10-7. Jenae Goodson hit for an ace while Kareemah Muhammad and
Katie Cooper pounded out kills to extend the lead to 17-11. Rachel Hausler then stepped up
and gave CSE an insurmountable lead at 20-11 with an ace and aided by an
Ireyiah Stevens kill. A late run
by the Lions made the set look closer than it was at 25-19.
The 2nd set saw much of the same. CSE ran out to a 7-3 lead behind the
timely hitting of Katie Cooper and continued to pressure PS Harrisburgh with
the blocking and hitting of Subhana Wrights and Kiara Francisco as the Eagles extended
the lead to 14-5. The Lions
crawled back to within 7 at 14-7 but a Wrights kill and 2 blocks by Ireiah
Stevens and Wrights helped seal the deal as Katie Cooper pounded out 2 aces to
finish the set 25-12.
The Eagles started the 3rd set as if they wanted
to leave no doubt in who was going to win the match. Saint Elizabeth ran out to an 8-0 lead behind 2 aces by Amy
Cooper and numerous Lion miscues.
Although the Eagles looked in control of the match, PS Harrisburgh
slowly started to mount an offense and cut the lead down to 5 at 11-6. After a few Eagle hitting errors and a
couple of kills out of the middle, the Lions saw themselves tied at 15 late in
the match. CSE reacted though and
the serving of Amy Cooper combined with the offense of Katie Cooper took the
Eagles to a 22-17 lead that looked to be insurmountable. After an Eagle service error though,
the Lions ran off 5 straight points as their offense regained its rhythm while
the CSE passing lost theirs. A key
block gave the Eagles match point at 24-23 but the Lions responded and tied the
match at 24. PS Harrisburgh had 2
match points be denied by an Amy Cooper kill and a passing error forced by a
Katie Cooper attack before the Eagles saw their next match point at 27-26. A key service error by the Eagles gave
the ball back to Harrisburgh who capitalized on their chances and took the set
29-27.
The 4th set proved to be more competitive early
as the teams traded points and were tied at 7 early on. The Eagles went on 6-0 run fueled by
Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights kills as well as timely digs by Rachel Hausler
(13-7). Although the Lions broke
their momentum, the Eagles responded with another 9-3 run behind Jenae
Goodson’s serving (2 aces) and the blocking of Subhana Wrights and Ireyiah
Stevens (22-16). Yet again, the
Eagles looked poised to finish off the match but the Lions went on 7-0 run
where the Eagles had 5 consecutive passing errors to take the lead at
23-22. Saint Elizabeth fought back
to tie it at 23 behind a Katie Cooper kill but an inopportune service error
gave the Lions the ball and PS Harrisburgh was able to take advantage of their
opportunities and closed out the set 25-23.
Typical of the 2012 season though, the Eagles seem to save
their best performance for last.
Despite a disastrous loss of 2 sets to the Lions, the Eagles fought back
in the 5th and decisive set.
The teams were clicking
offensively at first and saw themselves tied 4-4. Kills by Kareemah Muhammad and Katie
Cooper gave the Eagles an edge at 8-4.
After the Lions had closed to within 1, Subhana Wrights pounded out a
kill to give Saint Elizabeth an 8-6 lead at the change of sides. The Lions climbed back into the set with
timely kills to get to within 1 at 9-8 but amazing desperation digs by Katie
Cooper and Rachel Hausler led to a Lion hitting error which gave the Eagles a 2
point cushion again at 10-8.
Kareemah Muhammad hit for an ace and Katie Cooper and Amy Cooper added
kills around a passing error to see the Eagles crawl closer to the victory at
13-10. Rachel Hausler’s serving
put the Lions under pressure and caused a passing error which CSE did not waste
as another Hausler serve yielded a free ball that Subhana Wrights put down for
the 15th point to seal the 13th victory of the season for the Eagles.
The Eagles were led by Katie Cooper’s career high 21 kills
and .203 hitting %. Amy Cooper
dished out 41 assists, had 3 kills and led the team with 6 aces while teammate
Rachel Hausler chipped in 3 aces of her own and had a team leading 24 digs.
Subhana Wrights had another double digit kill total at 11 and added 4
blocks.
The Eagles improve to 13W-7L and are 3W-5L in the NEAC.
EAGLES OVERRUN BY BISON
Saint Elizabeth took to the floor on day 2 with the task of
taking on the Bison of Gallaudet University, last year’s #2 team in the
conference and eventual winner of the NEAC Tournament and conference
representative to the NCAA tournament.
The Bison had an unblemished record in the NEAC coming into the day and
it remained so in convincing fashion against the Eagles. Gallaudet jumped out to a 9-1 lead in
set 1 and never looked back, cruising to a 25-12 set 1 win.
Set 2 began much the same way with the Bison out in front
12-1 before the Eagles got on track.
The Bison were relentless and punished every CSE error to knock off the
Eagles 25-7 in set 2.
Set 3 proved to be more of the same as Gallaudet jumped out
front early 9-1 lead and just stymied the Eagle offense in route to a convincing
25-7 set and match victory.
Subhana Wrights led the Eagles yet again, hitting for 6
kills while Kareemah Muhammad chipped in 4 in the defeat. Eagles drop to 12W-7L.
SAINT ELIZABETH GETS WORN DOWN BY LIONS
The Eagles entered the 2nd match of the NEAC weekend
still looking for their first win.
In their way, last year’s #1 team in the conference, the Lions of Penn
State. The Eagles stood toe-to-toe
with the Lions most of the match.
CSE tied the score early 4-4 through a Subhana Wrights kill and took a 1
point lead after a Kareemah Muhammad kill. A Katie Cooper kill put the Eagles up 11-10 but the Lions
jumped out to a 15-12 lead thanks to a couple of CSE hitting errors.
After a couple of Lions’ miscues forced by good Eagle
hitting, CSE climbed back into the match tying it at 15. However, the Lions finished off the set
on a 10-1 run as the Eagles poor passing made its offense very predictable and
PS Berks was able to get kills in transition to close out the set.
The second set began much like the first set with both teams
unable to get any sort of advantage as CSE saw themselves in a 6-6 game. The Lions then ran off 6 straight
points as the Eagle offense could not keep the ball in play. Two hitting errors by the Lions’ squad
gave Saint Elizabeth life at 12-8 but CSE could not sustain momentum and PS
Berks went on a 8-2 run that was finally stopped by a Lion hitting error. A couple of Kareemah Muhammad kills
late made it 23-14 but the lead was too great and the Lions closed out the set
25-14.
Typical of the 2012 campaign, the Eagles did not wilt under
a 2 set deficit and provided the fans with the best set of the afternoon in the
3rd. Once again the
teams were tied early at 4 and later on at 9 as each team was struggling to
stop each other’s offense. At
12-12, the Lions went on a 5-0 run fueled by a couple of kills and blocks out
of the middle to extend the lead to 17-12. Although the Eagles stopped the run briefly thanks to a
Katie Cooper swing, the Lions got another 2 kills to push the lead to 20-14. An ace by Jenae Goodson brought the
team within 3 at 20-17 but a costly serve error gave the ball and momentum back
to the Lions who closed out the set on a 5-2 run (25-20)
Katie Cooper led the Eagles in defeat with 11 kills and was
a perfect 13/13 in serve receptions.
Amy Cooper dished out 19 assists and joined teammate Rachel Hausler for
a combined 30 digs. Jenae Goodson hit for 2 aces in the loss. Eagles drop to
12W-6L.
EAGLES CAN’T OVERCOME CHARGERS’ DOWN THE STRETCH
CSE took to the court in match 1 of the NEAC weekend looking
to upset last year’s #4 seed, Lancaster Bible College. The Eagles started off well versus the
Chargers, taking a 9-3 lead early behind
an ace by Rachel Hausler and kills from Ireyiah Stevens, Subhana Wrights
and Katie Cooper. LBC responded
though with a 6-0 run that knotted the score at 9.
The match became a defensive struggle after that as each
team was unable to generate consistent offense due to the blocking and digging
of the other team. With the score
tied at 20, the Eagles took advantage of 2 Chargers’ hitting errors and a kill
by Subhana Wrights to take a stunning 23-20 lead. Another Wrights kill after a Chargers’ kill pushed the
Eagles closer to a set 1 victory at 24-21 but the Chargers got a kill off the
right side and the Eagles followed with 2 hitting errors to see the score get
tied again at 24. An error by the
Chargers gave the ball back to CSE for the set but a kill out of the middle
tied things up again. The Eagles
could not put the ball away on serve receive and the Chargers took full
advantage, hitting for 2 kills in transition and finishing the set with a 27-25
score.
The second set saw the teams trade points early but at 9-9, LBC
went on a 5-0 run that saw the lead extend to 14-10. Kills by Katie Cooper and
Amy Cooper and an ace by Katie drew CSE closer at 20-17 but Saint Elizabeth was
never able to cut into that early 5 point gap sufficiently to change the
outcome, a 25-19 set win by LBC.
The 3rd set had the same start as the previous 2
and the score was knotted at 6 early on.
Lancaster Bible went on a mini 3-0 to extend the lead to 3 at 10-7. A Kareemah Muhammad kill broke that
momentum briefly but the Chargers came back with a 5-2 run to extend the lead
to 15-10. Saint Elizabeth could
not find the court with their hits which allowed the Chargers to go on a 5-1
run that put CSE in a 20-11 hole. CSE tried to respond but the lead was too
great and the Eagles lost the set and match 25-14.
The Eagles were led by Subhana Wrights who hit for 11 kills
and had 4 blocks. The Eagles gave
up only one ace in large part due to the outstanding passing of Rachel Hausler
and Katie Cooper, who were 57/58 in serve receptions. Amy Cooper and Rachel Hausler led the team with 11 digs
each. Eagles drop to 12W-5L.

CSE RALLY FALLS SHORT VS. PS ABBINGTON; COOPER, WRIGHTS COMBINE FOR 35 KILLS
MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Saint Elizabeth sophomore outside hitter Katie Cooper had a team-high 19 kills while middle hitter Subhana Wrights added 16 kills as the Screaming Eagles were unable to complete the comeback in a marathon volleyball match in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at St. Joseph's Hall.
Down two sets to the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington, CSE (10-3, 2-2 NEAC) rallied to win the third and fourth sets and fought back to tie the fifth set. But the visitors pushed through for the final two points and exited St. Joseph's Hall with a crucial NEAC win, 3-2. The set scores read 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 16-14 in the two-hour match.
The Screaming Eagles trailed in both of the early sets and looked to be headed for an early exit courtesy of Penn State Abington (9-3, 3-1 NEAC).
But if anything can be learned from the 2012 CSE volleyball team, it is that the squad won't roll over.
In the third set, the Screaming Eagles opened up a 10-5 lead following a productive service run by senior Nashlly Sokoli and a kill by Wrights. CSE maintained its six-point advantage with a kill and a service ace by Katie Cooper. An overpass by CSE ended up on the net and setter Amy Cooper bested the PSU Abington defender for a kill and a 21-13 lead that quickly turned into a 25-20 set victory.
Wrights keyed strong play by CSE at the start of the fourth set, putting down another kill for a 5-2 set lead. Amy Cooper and sophomore Kiara Francisco combined for a block on the PSU Abington attack and the Screaming Eagles opened up an 11-4 advantage. Wrights found another kill, playing down a second ball to get the lead to 17-12. Two points later it was junior Kareemah Muhammad's turn to post a kill on the attack for the Screaming Eagles. A run of hitting errors flung the door wide open for CSE and another kill by Katie Cooper brought the Screaming Eagles to match point which easily jumped to a set victory to even the match.
In the final set, the Nittany Lions dug in their heels and took a 4-2 lead. Wrights ran off consecutive kills to even the score. PSU Abington got into its strongest rotation midway through the set and ran off three consecutive kills to take a 13-8 lead. But a pair of hitting errors brought CSE closer and Katie Cooper's kill narrowed the deficit to 13-11 PSU Abington.
The Screaming Eagles fought off three match points -- once with a Katie Cooper kill -- and at 14-13 Katie Cooper combined with Francisco for a block to knot the match at 14-all. PSU Abington pushed forward for the final two points and the crucial NEAC win.
Katie Cooper finished with 19 kills and 24 digs. Wrights added her 16 kills and 2.5 blocks while Muhammad added seven kills.
Amy Cooper directed the offense with 41 assists and added a team-best three aces. Sophomore Rachel Hausler topped the defense with 32 digs.
