EAGLES DISPATCH DOLPHINS IN 4 FOR 14TH WIN

Saint Elizabeth took on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a non-conference match-up as the Eagles looked to right themselves after a tough 1W-3L performance during the 2nd conference weekend of the year this past weekend.

The first set proved to be a comedy of errors for the Eagles as uncharacteristic errors of all types (10 of them) plagued Saint Elizabeth which allowed the Dolphins to take a 17-13 past the midpoint of the set. A couple of kills by Katie Cooper and another by Ireyah Stevens coupled with an Amy Cooper ace brought the Eagles back to an 18-18 tie late in the set.  At 20-20, a costly service error by the Dolphins gave Saint Elizabeth the opening they needed as Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights hit for two kills in a 4-2 run that sealed the set for CSE, 25-22.  Although the Eagles committed 14 errors in the set, their .233 hitting % saved the set as Saint Elizabeth hit for 12 kills, led by Katie Cooper's 5 kills.

The 2nd set started a bit more evenly and with less errors by both sides.  Staten Island jumped out to a 15-10 lead however as the Eagles hit for 3 consecutive hitting errors nearing the midway point of the set.  Another service error by the Dolphins opened the door for Saint Elizabeth and 3 SubhanaWright's kills later, the Eagles had crawled back to within 3 at 14-17.  CSE got as close as 1 at 23-24 as the Dolphins had 3 consecutive hitting errors but a left-side kill put an end to the set for the Eagles as CSI earned a 25-23 set win.  The Eagles hit for .200 and 11 kills in the set led by Subhana Wrights' 5 kills but it was not enough to overcome the Dolphin attack.

The 3rd set proved to be the turning point of the match.  The Eagles hit for 11 kills at a .207 clip but the offense was balanced as Saint Elizabeth got 4 kills apiece from Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights.  The Eagles were also able to draw aces from 4 rotations and got 9 perfect digs from Rachel Hausler to stymie the Dolphin offense.  Saint Elizabeth turned a 3-3 tie early on into a rout as the Eagles went on an 11-3 run sparked by Wrights and K. Cooper that ended any hope for the Dolphins in the set.  Eagles finished the set off with a kill by Amy Cooper to give CSE a 25-16 win.

The 4th set was by far the worst hitting set for CSE as the team only managed 8 kills (.038) but a stifling defense that yielded 4 blocks, a 2.27 pass rating -2.42 by Rachel Hausler- and a set high 18 digs  proved to be more than enough to shut down the Dolphin offense that was held to 3 kills and 1 block in the set.  Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammad struck for 6 kills combined but it was the blocking of Wrights -4 blocks in the set- that turned the set decisively around and kept Staten Island at bay, never allowing the Dolphins to be within 4 points of CSE as the Eagles easily won the set and match 25-15 for their 14th win of the year.

The Eagles struck for 42 kills, 10 aces, 61 digs and 8 blocks to pace a balanced win for the team.  Subhana Wrights led the offense with 15 kills and a .393 hitting % while the passing trio of Rachel Hausler, Katie Cooper and Misato Oya gave up only 1 ace the entire match to kickstart the Eagle offense.  Rachel Hausler led the team with a perfect 43/43 serve receptions and a 2.39 pass rating. Amy Cooper had 18 digs to lead the squad and dished out 34 assists.

The Eagles take on the New Jersey City Gothic Knights at 11am and the Medgar Evers Cougars at 3pm, Saturday, October 13th at St. Joseph's Hall looking for their 15th and 16th wins of the season!
