SCREAMING EAGLES OVERCOME SLOW START TO NOTCH 11TH WIN

The Screaming Eagles traveled to Baltimore, Md. to take on the Gators of Notre Dame.  CSE was looking to bounce back from a tough 5 set loss to PS Abbington and re-establish their winning ways.

The first set did not start well for the Eagles as they had 8 straight offensive errors which put the team in an 11-7 hole early on.  A couple of kills from Katie Cooper and a Gator error allowed CSE to be within 1 at 14-15 but a block by Notre Dame pushed the lead back up to 2.  After a Subhana Wrights and Katie Cooper block,  CSE trailed 16-20 but the Gators went on a 5-0 run to close out the set 25-16.

The second set saw a much more precise Screaming Eagle squad.  The Eagles opened up a 10-2 lead behind kills by Wrights, Kareemah Muhammad and Kiara Francisco while K. Cooper hit for a couple of aces in the run.  Although Notre Dame was able to break serve, the Eagles got it right back and Jenae Goodson extended the lead to 23-5 after 5 aces and a Wrights' kill and block with Amy Cooper.  Muhammad finshid off the Gators in set 2 with a kill out of the left side to seal the set at 25-6.

The 3rd set was a competitive game with neither team able to pull away early.  With the score 6-5,  a Gator hitting error and a K. Cooper ace to get the Eagles a 3 point lead that they would not relinquish.  The Gators closed to within 2 multiple times but each time a Notre Dame error or an Eagle kill pushed the Eagle back up to 3.  After Notre Dame closed to within 2 again at 19-17,  3 straight errors by the Gators gave the Eagles a 22-17 lead that was insurmountable.  A Wrights' kill and a Zuleima Molina ace helped seal Notre Dame's fate in the set 25-18.

The 4th set saw the Eagles jump out to a 5-0 lead behind A. Cooper's 2 aces and a K. Cooper kill.  Although the Gators were able to gain possession of the ball, the Eagles ran out to a 10-3 lead behind a K. Cooper kill and ace.  After a break of serve,  CSE went on a 4-0 run that took the air out of the Gator team as they trailed 14-5.  CSE and Notre Dame traded points from that point on and the Eagles continued to control the set 21-11.  Kareemah Muhammad closed out the set with a kill to the 10ft. line that gave the set and match to CSE 25-18.

Subhana Wrights and Katie Cooper hit for 10 kills apiece and Kareemah Muhammad had 9 as Amy Cooper ran a balanced offense and collected 29 assists.  Jenae Goodson notched 6 aces  and Katie Cooper added 5 to pace a 17 ace attack by CSE.  Katie also had a team high 17 digs and Rachel Hausler added 11 to lead the Eagle effort.

The Eagles look to get their 12th win when the team takes on the Bloodhounds of John Jay College at St. Joe's Hall, Tuesday,  October 2, at 7 pm.

CSE RALLY FALLS SHORT VS. PS ABBINGTON; COOPER, WRIGHTS COMBINE FOR 35 KILLS

MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Saint Elizabeth sophomore outside hitter Katie Cooper had a team-high 19 kills while middle hitter Subhana Wrights added 16 kills as the Screaming Eagles were unable to complete the comeback in a marathon volleyball match in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at St. Joseph's Hall.

Down two sets to the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington, CSE (10-3, 2-2 NEAC) rallied to win the third and fourth sets and fought back to tie the fifth set. But the visitors pushed through for the final two points and exited St. Joseph's Hall with a crucial NEAC win, 3-2. The set scores read 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 16-14 in the two-hour match.

The Screaming Eagles trailed in both of the early sets and looked to be headed for an early exit courtesy of Penn State Abington (9-3, 3-1 NEAC).

But if anything can be learned from the 2012 CSE volleyball team, it is that the squad won't roll over.

In the third set, the Screaming Eagles opened up a 10-5 lead following a productive service run by senior Nashlly Sokoli and a kill by Wrights. CSE maintained its six-point advantage with a kill and a service ace by Katie Cooper. An overpass by CSE ended up on the net and setter Amy Cooper bested the PSU Abington defender for a kill and a 21-13 lead that quickly turned into a 25-20 set victory.

Wrights keyed strong play by CSE at the start of the fourth set, putting down another kill for a 5-2 set lead. Amy Cooper and sophomore Kiara Francisco combined for a block on the PSU Abington attack and the Screaming Eagles opened up an 11-4 advantage. Wrights found another kill, playing down a second ball to get the lead to 17-12. Two points later it was junior Kareemah Muhammad's turn to post a kill on the attack for the Screaming Eagles. A run of hitting errors flung the door wide open for CSE and another kill by Katie Cooper brought the Screaming Eagles to match point which easily jumped to a set victory to even the match.

In the final set, the Nittany Lions dug in their heels and took a 4-2 lead. Wrights ran off consecutive kills to even the score. PSU Abington got into its strongest rotation midway through the set and ran off three consecutive kills to take a 13-8 lead. But a pair of hitting errors brought CSE closer and Katie Cooper's kill narrowed the deficit to 13-11 PSU Abington.

The Screaming Eagles fought off three match points -- once with a Katie Cooper kill -- and at 14-13 Katie Cooper combined with Francisco for a block to knot the match at 14-all. PSU Abington pushed forward for the final two points and the crucial NEAC win.

Katie Cooper finished with 19 kills and 24 digs. Wrights added her 16 kills and 2.5 blocks while Muhammad added seven kills.

Amy Cooper directed the offense with 41 assists and added a team-best three aces. Sophomore Rachel Hausler topped the defense with 32 digs.

The Screaming Eagles will be on the road for five of its next six matches, starting on Saturday with a trip to Baltimore to take on the College of Notre Dame in Maryland. The lone home match will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 2 when John Jay visits St. Joseph's Hall for a 7 p.m. contest.

SAINT ELIZABETH UPEND HOSTS AT CONFERENCE MATCH

The Screaming Eagles battled a resillient Suny Cobleskill squad in the 3rd and final conference matchup of the weekend.

CSE looked to get back to its winning ways and pick up their 2nd win of the conference weekend.  The Eagles did not disappoint as the athletes came together in a complete effort to tame the Fighting Tigers.  In set 1, the story was Katie Cooper who hit for a team leading 4 kills and a team leading 4 aces to pace an 8 kill, 7 ace attack that finished off the Tigers 25-19.

Set 2 began rather differently, however.  The Tigers jumped out to a 7-3 lead fueled by very efficient attacks.  Saint Elizabeth kept fighting to stay close,  cutting the lead down to 2 numerous times (6-8, 9-11, 13-15, 15-17 and 16-18).  With the Tigers leading 18-16,  a kill by Amy Cooper and an ace by Rachel Hausler had the Eagles knotted up at 18.  With the score tied at 19, Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammed pounded down a kill and Katie Cooper added 2 aces to push the lead to 23-19.  But the Tigers wouldn't give up and Cobleskill tied up the score at 24 behind some crucial Eagle hitting errors late.  A Subhana Wrights kill gave the match point back to CSE but the Tigers fought back to tie it at 25.  Kareemah Muhammad then got into the mix, nailing down a crucial kill to give the ball back to CSE at 26-25.  But the Eagles could not convert as another service error gave the Tigers a 26-26 tie.  A Tiger error later gave the ball back to Amy Cooper who did not hesitate in the moment and scored an ace to close out the set 28-26.  Kareemah Muhammad led the team with 5 kills in the set while Katie Cooper and Rachel Hausler combined for 20 digs to keep the Eagle offense rolling.

After trailing early in the 3rd set 0-2, the Eagles went on an 8-2 run sparked by Rachel Hausler and Amy Cooper's serving to take control of the set 8-4.  At 10-6, Saint Elizabeth rattled off 5 straight points, 3 of them through kills by Kareemah Muhammad, to extend their lead to 15-6.  The Eagle offense continued to roll as the Eagles would not allow the Tigers to get any momentum in the set.  With the score 23-14,  CSE's passing and defense allowed Subhana Wrights and Kareemah Muhammad to pound out the last 2 kills as the team finished off Cobleskill in 3 sets (25-19, 28-26, 25-16).  Kareemah Muhammad, Amy Cooper and Subhana Wrights led the offense with a combined 10 kills and Rachel Hausler added 3 aces and a perfect 7 serve reception effort to lead the Eagles to victory in the 3rd set.

Katie Cooper led the team with 10 kills, 12 digs and 6 aces.  Kareemah Muhammad and Subhana Wrights both chipped in 9 kills each.  Wrights also added 3 blocks to the cause.  Amy Cooper lead a balanced offense with 26 assists and added 4 aces and 6 digs. Rachel Hausler hammered home 5 aces and dug up 8 balls in the victory.

Next up for the Eagles are the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Abbington on Wednesday, September 26 at 7pm at St. Joe's Hall in a NEAC conference matchup.  The Eagles will be looking to improve their overall record to 11W-3L and 3W-1L in the NEAC.

EAGLES CAN'T OVERCOME STORM

In the second match of the NEAC conference weekend, the Eagles took on the Keuka Storm looking to keep their 7 game winning streak alive.  The Storm, however, thwarted the Eagles' offense at every turn and walked away with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 victory.

The Eagles and the Storm wee engaged in a tight battle in set 1, tied at 6 early before the Storm went on  a 7-2 run that gave Keuka a 13-8 lead.  But the Eagles responded and cut the lead down to 2 at 13-15.  But in a game of momentum swings,  the Storm stopped the Eagles from getting any closer and went on a 3-1 run to extend their lead to 18-14. The Eagles could not cut into the deficit as the Storm dug up numerous Eagle attacks at key moments to maintain the four point lead (22-18). After a CSE service error and attack error, the Storm put down a left-side kill to seal the set 25-18. Rachel Hausler led the team with 8 digs and Katie Cooper and Kareemah Muhammad paced the Saint Elizabeth offense with 4 kills combined.

The second set saw a much more confident Eagle team and CSE raced out to an 8-5 lead thanks to Subhana Wrights' blocking out of the middle and Kareemah Muhammad's offense out of the outside.  However, the Storm came back with a 5-0 run behind very precise hitting to edge ahead 10-8. The Eagles kept fighting back to within one various times (10-11, 12-13,14-15,17-18) thanks to superior passing by Rachel Hausler, Katie Cooper and Misato Oya.  But in a game of momentum swings, CSE seemed to be at the wrong side of them late in the match.  Keuka went on a 6-1 run that pushed the Eagles to the brink at 18-24.  Saint Elizabeth tried to stay in the set behind an Amy Cooper ace, a Katie Cooper and a Kiara Francisco kills but after a successful right-side attack by the Storm, the Eagles fell 25-21.  Katie Cooper and Kareemah Muhammad led the team with 5 kills combined while Rachel Hausler once again dug up 8 attacks in the set.

The 3rd and decisive set proved to be quite a challenge for Saint Elizabeth.  CSE trailed early 7-3 and could not recover as the Storm continue to press the issue and extend their lead to 13-8 midway through the match.  Although the Eagles found their offense through the set, the Storm got that crucial dig every time to thwart a large momentum swing to CSE's side.  CSE trailed 19-14 late in the set and again 22-17 at the closing moments.  Keuka closed the set out with a 3-1 run to finish off the Eagles and their winning streak. Saint Elizabeth was led by Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights with a combined 6 kills in the set while Rachel Hausler continued her excellent play with 6 more digs.

SCREAMING EAGLES TAKE OUT CAZENOVIA WILDCATS IN 5

The Screaming Eagles took on the Cazenovia Wildcats in day 1 of the NEAC Conference weekend at SUNY Cobleskill.

CSE started off strong, taking a an early 3-1 lead and later extended it to 11-7. But the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run sustained by 5 Eagle errors that pushed Cazenovia out front to a 14-12 lead. After an Amy Cooper kill gave the ball back to CSE, Cazenovia continued to pour on the pressure by going on a 6-4 run that pushed the Wildcats to a 20-16 lead.  Cazenovia closed the set out 25-21 after a CSE service error at 24-21.  The Eagles hit for 10 kills and 2 aces in the set with Subhana Wrights leading the way with 2 kills and 3 blocks.

The second set was a tight affair throughout with neither team being able to pull away from the other early on.  The Wildcats opened a slight 2 point lead midway through the match (10-12) but the Eagles continued to fight back into the match and tied it at 16-16 after a Wildcat service error.  Then the wheels came off the Eagle serve receive and after 3 aces and a couple of kills by Cazenovia, CSE found themselves in a 23-19 hole they could not recover from and fell 25-20. Subhana Wrights led the way again with 3 kills and 2 blocks while Rachel Hausler had 8 digs in the set.

The Eagles stormed out of the gates in set 3 and never looked back in a dominant performance.  CSE ran off a 4-0 lead behind 2 aces by Amy Cooper and held that lead halfway through the match (12-8).  Katie Cooper was dominant in the front row as she pounded out 5 kills and Kiara Francisco had 2 blocks to lead the Eagles on a 13-4 run and a set victory.

Saint Elizabeth trailed most of the 4th set as the Wildcats stepped up the pressure.  Cazenovia held 5-1, 8-4 and 13-9 leads as the Eagles could not sustain any momentum.  After 5 Cazenovia errors,  CSE managed to tie the set at 19 before another service error gave the lead and ball to Cazenovia.  After 2 late errors by the Eagles, Cazenovia saw themselves 1 point away from a 4 set victory at 24-21 before a passing error gave the Eagles life at 22-24.  Amy Cooper hit for an ace and Cazenovia had another hitting error to push the score to 24 all.  After another service ace by Amy Cooper, Cazenovia finally put down a kill to knot the score at 25.  Cazenovia then missed a serve and followed up with a hitting error to give Saint Elizabeth the unlikely 4th set win at 27-25. Katie Cooper and Kareemah Muhammad combined for 8 kills and 1 ace to pace the Eagle offense while Amy Cooper's 4 aces were a team best.

Cazenovia took an early 3-2 lead behing some clutch hitting but the Eagles continued their 5th set heroics,  taking Subhana Wrights' 2 kills as a diving board to jump out to a 6-4 lead.  A Kareemah Muhammad kill and a Jenae Goodson ace extended the lead to 8-4 at the midway point of the set.  Another Muhammad kill and a Katie Cooper kill later on sparked a run that had the Eagles on top 11-8.  Cazenovia kept fighting back,  getting a couple of key kills to even out the score at 12.  The teams traded the next few points and the score was knotted up at 14 before a couple of perfect passes from Rachel Hausler led kills Subhana Wrights to wrap up the match.

SCREAMING EAGLES TAME FEISTY LIONS OF KING'S COLLEGE

Saint Elizabeth traveled to NY city to take on the King's College Lions in a rematch of last weekend's 4 set victory by the Eagles at New Rochelle.  CSE took the win in a competitive match filled with momentum swings.

Saint Elizabeth was nearly flawless in the first set as the team hit for a .367 avg. (12k - 1err - 30 att) in route to a comfortable and dominant 25-13 set win.  The Eagles were led by Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights offensively in the set.

The second set proved to be a different story altogether.  The Lions roared back into the match taking an early 11-6 lead and an 18-13 lead on the Eagles.  Although CSE was able to tie the set up at 23, the Lions closed it out 25-23 on tough serving that put the Eagles on their heels.  Although the Eagles hit for 11 kills,  8 service errors in the set negated that advantage and allowed the Lions to tie the match at 1 set all.

The third set saw another momentum swing occur.   The Eagles got their serving back in order as Katie Cooper struck for 7 service points (including 3 aces) in a 7-0 run that fueled a 25-10 set victory for the Eagles.  CSE hit .263 in the set with 8 kills to their credit.

But the Lions would strike back as Saint Elizabeth could not sustain their momentum in the 4th set.  While the Lions had their best set, hitting .304 with 12 kills, the Eagles hit .000 with 9 kills.  Saint Elizabeth's serving kept the set within reach as the Eagles came back to within 3 points (19-16) after trailing big early (13-5) but the Lions' attack was too much down the stretch and the Eagles bowed out 25-19.

For the 3rd time this season CSE played in a 5th and decisive set.  In the earlier 2 (Goucher and Culinary), the Eagles trailed early but finished strong to get the wins.  This would be another repeat of what is becoming a habit for Saint Elizabeth.  The Eagles trailed 5-3 early when Rachel Hausler served up 2 aces and 8 service points to push the Eagle lead to 11-3, a lead they would not relinquish.  Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights combined for 5 kills in the set to lead the Eagles to their 3rd consecutive 5th set win of the season.

Saint Elizabeth extends their winning streak to 6 games and will enter their first 3 conference matches at SUNY Cobleskill (Cazenovia, Keuka and Cobleskill) this weekend with an 8W-2L record, the best start ever in program history.

EAGLES DOMINANT AGAINST HOLY ANGELS

The second match for CSE on Saturday was against host College of New Rochelle.  The Eagles were looking to get their second win of the day against the Holy Angels who had lost a tough 5 set match to King's College earlier in the day.

The match began very evenly for both teams and the set was filled with errors on both sides as neither team could pull away early.  The service game was nearly perfect again (22/24) as the Eagles hit for 4 aces in the process and that proved to be the main difference in the set.  Amy Cooper ran a balanced offense getting 9 kills from 4 different players and added 3 aces as the team pulled away late for a comfortable 25-14 set victory.

Although the Holy Angels eliminated many of the hitting and serving errors they suffered through in the first set,  CSE was nearly perfect at the outset of the second set and took a commanding 10-4 lead behind the hitting and blocking of Subhana Wrights.   Wrights led the Eagle offense with 5 kills and a .333 hitting percentage while combining with Amy Cooper for 2 blocks in the run.  CNR fought back to within 2 at 14-12 but a key kill by Katie Cooper gave the Eagles the ball back and following another kill by K.Cooper, CSE had reestablished a 4 point lead again.  This proved to be decisive as the teams traded points after that with CSE leading 20-16 late.  CNR could not get gain any momentum as key kills by K.Cooper, Ireyiah Stevens and Kareemah Muhammad sealed the set at 25-20.

The final set saw an Eagle offense that just simply overwhelmed the Holy Angels.  Kareemah Muhammad, Subhana Wrights and Katie Cooper combined for 13 kills out of 26 attempts with only 4 errors to pace what was a dominant performance by the team.  K.Cooper led the way with 7 kills and a .250 hitting percentage while Amy Cooper yet again led the way from the service line with another 2 aces.  CSE opened up the set behind Amy Cooper's serving on a 10-3 run and never looked back as they closed out the set and the match 25-18.

The Eagle's improved to a program best 6W-2L to open the 2012 campaign and look to continue their 4 game winning streak against York College on Wednesday, September 19th at home (7pm).

EAGLES OVERCOME SLOW START TO DOWN LIONS

The College of St. Elizabeth entered Saturday's tri-match versus The King's College with aspirations to continue the best start in program history and improve to 5W-2L.  The Lady Lions, however, had other plans.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind 2 aces by Amy Cooper but the Lady Lions clawed back to tie the Eagles at 7 thanks to key hitting and serving errors by CSE.  With the score knotted at 10-10, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run fueled by Misato Oya's serving which yielded 1 ace and led to easy attack opportunities by Katie Cooper who put away 2 kills in the run.

But the Lady Lions came off a timeout and proceeded to go on a 15-5 run that sealed the Eagles fate in the set.  The stunning turnaround was due in large part to 13 Eagle errors in that run.

The second set saw a much more precise Eagle team take the floor.  Amy Cooper ran a much more balanced offense that saw 5 different players get kills and the team went 24/25 from the serving line which made the difference in a 25-11 dominant set victory.

In set 3, the Eagles again were nearly perfect from the service line (23/24) but had the best hitting percentage of the year in a set (.406) as Kareemah Muhammad, Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights pounded out 16 kills (3 errors) to pull away late and take the set 25-15.

CSE couldn't maintain that torrid offensive pace in set 4 but once again the serving game was the key as the team went a perfect 25/25 from the service line.  Subhana Wrights paced the team's offense with a dominant .400 hitting efficiency as she collected a team leading 5 kills and added a block to pace the team to victory in a 25-18 win.

SCREAMING EAGLES SECURE THE VICTORY, WRIGHTS HELPS CSE ROLL PAST BRYN ATHYN IN 4 SETS

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – St. Elizabeth juniors Subhana Wrights and Amy Cooper combined for 18 kills as the Screaming Eagles topped Bryn Athyn, 3-1, in non-conference volleyball action at St. Joseph’s Hall Thursday night.
The Screaming Eagles (4-2) won by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-19.
CSE got in an early hole to start the match as Bryn Athyn (2-7)took a 5-2 lead. The Screaming Eagles rallied to tie the set at 7-7 and behind six kills from sophomore attack Katie Cooper won the first, 25-21.
Bryn Athyn came back to take the second set, 25-19, after being down 11-10. A run of three consecutive aces by Kaitlyn Brock gave Bryn Athyn the momentum to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set was tight at 8-6 CSE, but a 10-7 run fueled by two aces from senior Nashlly Sokoli put the home team up 18-13. Junior setter Amy Cooper put down a second ball for her second kill of the set and a 20-15 CSE lead. Sophomores Kiara Francisco and Ireyah Stevens combined to block a Bryn Athyn attack to give St. Elizabeth the 23-15 lead which quickly turned into a 25-16 third-set win.

EAGLES GET 2 OF 3 AT BRYN ATHYN

SCREAMING EAGLES TAME THE LIONS OF BRYN ATHYN

The Eagles headed out to Bryn Athyn this past Saturday to face off against the Bryn Athyn Lions, the Bryn Mawr Owls and the Goucher Gophers in a competitive quad match.

CSE opened the quad match versus the Bryn Athyn Lions and the set proved to be extremely competitive as both squads could not sustain any real momentum in a set that featured multiple lead changes.  Late in the set however, with CSE leading 20-19,  the Eagles went on 4-1 run fueled by a Kiara Francisco block, a Katie Cooper kill and a couple of Lion errors that sealed the set at 25-21.

The second set saw a more inspired Bryn Athyn side who took control early of the set and seemed to be on its way to an easy second set victory midway through the set leading 13-7.  After an Eagle timeout, CSE got back to its precise passing and tough serving which paid immediate dividends.  The Eagles went on an 18-5 run to close out the second set.  Amy Cooper and Katie Cooper led the comeback behind the service line, hitting for a 5 aces and 9 service points in the midst of the run to lead the comeback.

The momentum gained in the second set carried into the third as the Eagles took control early and never looked back, beating the Lions 25-11 to take the match 3 sets to 0.  Kareemah Muhammad led the offense in the 3rd set with 3 kills while Rachel Hausler received 8 of the team's total serve receptions with a 2.0 rating and a set leading 7 digs.

EAGLES NO MATCH FOR BRYN MAWR OWLS

Although the Eagles looked convincing in their victory over Bryn Athyn,  the team could not muster a consistent effort against the Owls of Bryn Mawr.  Numerous errors cost the team any chance to control any of the 3 sets as the Owls opened up a lead early in each set that the Eagles could not cut into.  The Eagles fell 25-17, 25-15, 25-16.  CSE was led by Katie Cooper's 8 kills and Kareemah Muhammad's 7 kills (only 3 errors). Rachel Hausler saw 41 serve receptions and was error free on 39 of them with a team leading pass rating of 2.13 and a team leading 9 digs.

SCREAMING EAGLES SOAR TO ANOTHER 5 SET WINNER VS. GOPHERS

CSE came off a tough loss to the Bryn Mawr Owls and were staring at the only undefeated team on the day, the Goucher College Gophers, as their last opponent.  CSE began the match well and the set was a back and forth affair that saw the Gophers take command of the set late as they took a 23-19 lead over the Eagles.  The Eagles forced the Gophers into bad passes through Amy Cooper's serving and the Captain finished off the set with an ace to give the Eagles a 25-23 set win.

The second set saw a much more inspired Gopher squad who played nearly flawless volleyball early while the Eagles were forced into numerous errors.  The Eagles trailed early and could never recover as the Gophers extended leads of 10-5 to 13-6 to 19-9 before closing out the set 25-17.  Subhana Wrights had a team high 3 kills and 1 block in the set.

CSE came off the matt in the 3rd set, again a tight back and forth set, until the Eagles were able to muster a mini 4-0 run midway through the set to take a 3 point lead at 13-10.  Although the Gophers were able to get to within one point at numerous times for the remainder of the set, the Eagles were able to get the crucial point to keep the Gophers at bay.  CSE closed out the set 25-23, led by the Cooper sisters' (Amy and Katie) 7 kills.  Zuleima Molina and Rachel Hausler added key aces late in the set to solidify the set victory.

The momentum shifted yet again in the fourth set, with the Gophers dominant early and never looking back.  The Eagles' miscues killed any opportunity the team had to take the fourth set as the Gophers wrapped up the set 25-12.

Much like the match against Culinary last week, the Eagles bounced back from a terrible performance in the key 4th set to post their best effort of the match in the 5th.  Although the Gophers were flying high after their dominant 4th set victory, the Eagles were unrelenting from the service line in the 5th and grounded the Gopher attack with tough, precise serving.  Although the Gophers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, an Eagle time-out settled the team and they played even with the Gophers over the next 6 points (6-3 Goucher).  CSE went on a 5-1 run then behind 2 kills by Captain Kareemah Muhammad and 1 kill by Subhana Wrights as Nashlly Sokoli's serving kept the Gophers off balance to take the lead at the midway point 8-7.

The set and match hung in the balance as the teams traded points and were deadlocked at 11 in the late stages of the match.  However, the Eagle serving had been perfect while the Gophers were committing key errors behind the service line.  One such error keyed a 4-0 burst by the Eagles to seal the set and match.  Katie Cooper put down a kill, Subhana Wrights and Ireyiah Stevens had a key block and Rachel Hausler served up an ace to follow a Gopher service error to spark the 4-0 run that closed out the set and match.

The win improves the record to 3 Wins and 2 Losses. The Eagles next host Bryn Athyn, Thursday, 9/13, at 7pm in a rematch of this past Saturday's match.

EAGLES ESCAPE THE STEELS THANKS TO NEWCOMER CONTRIBUTIONS

CSE took on the Steels of the Culinary Institute in the 2nd match of this weekend opener looking to avenge a 2011 4 set loss to this team and get their first win of the season.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-2 lead behind the tough serving of Rachel Hausler and looked to have the set well in control as the Steels could not muster any consistent offense while the Eagles seemed not to be able to miss. The Eagles extended their lead to 21-9 and never looked back as the Steels could not  keep their attacks in play and the Eagle block was too effective.  Eagles finished off the first set on a 4-0 run and won it by a 25-9 score.

The second set proved to be a different story.  The Steels found their offense and the Eagles, nearly error free during the first set, could not seem to get into rhythm in set 2.  The set was a back and forth affair with neither team able to pull away by more than 2-3 points at any given time.  With the score 9-6 CSE, Culinary went on a mini 3-0 run to tie the score but the Eagles did not falter and maintained control of the set trading points with the Steels. Both teams were attacking and serving efficiently, which caused numerous ties (12-12, 13-13,14-14) in the middle portion of the set.  The Eagles were able to open up a slight lead at 17-14 thanks to Katie Cooper's serving and the blocking of Co-Captains Subhana Wrights and Amy Cooper.  That seemed to be the spark the team needed as they maintained that slimmest of margins until late in the set at 23-20 thanks to timely hitting and defense.  The Steels could not seem to recover and CSE closed it out 25-22.

The 2nd set was a harbinger of things to come for the Eagles however.  The Steels had found their offense and were forcing the Eagles into tough offensive options.  The pattern continued in set 3 but this time, it was CSE that seemed to err on almost every ball early.  Trailing early 8-3,  Coach Martins called a timeout to address the team and the Eagles seemed to come back onto the court a bit more settled.  CSE went on a 6-3 run which saw the Eagles close to within 2 at 11-9 thanks to their tough serving. However, the hitting and passing errors crept up again and the Steels took full advantage, going on a 9-0 run which took the lead up to 20-9.  In a testament to their character, the Eagles went on a run of their own (8-3) which closed the gap to 6 at 23-17 but another 2 passing errors sealed the deal for the Steels as they took the set 25-17.

A demoralized Eagle team did not respond well to the start of the 4th set and found themselves down early 6-2. CSE fought back to within 1 at 7-6 behind some solid defense and blocking.  Unfortunately, the Eagle offense yielded many errors and the Steels went on a 14-4 (21-10) run that more than gave Culinary the cushion they needed to win set 4 by a  25-14 margin.  Opposite Jeane Goodson was also lost to the team in set 4 due to a knee injury and first year player Taisha Colon had to fill this most important spot.

The decisive final set saw a gritty and determined Eagle team rally themselves into the match as Colon continued to play seamlessly in Goodson's absence.  The Steels took an early 2-0 lead but the Eagles bounced back with a 3-0 run driven by 2 kills by Katie Cooper and a block by Cooper and Subhana Wrights.  The teams kept trading points as expected but the Steels took control back of the set with another 2-0 run that saw the Eagles commit 2 attack errors (7-6).  After the teams changed sides with CSE trailing 8-7, the Steels looked to expand their lead but it was CSE who took control of the set with a 5-2 run that put the team on the precipice of their first victory at 13-10.

It was then that team kill leader Katie Cooper was injured on a headlong dive and was lost for the match.  Without their kill leader and most effective hitter, Coach Martins looked to his Captains,  Amy Cooper, Kareemah Muhammad, Subhana Wrights and Rachel Hausler to settle the nerves of Colon and first year player Alyssa Moscova as the match was in the balance.  The Steels proceeded to go on a 3-0 run to take a 14-13 lead with 1 kill, a block and an Eagle error.  With the Steels serving for the match,  Rachel Hausler then passed a perfect 3 ball to Amy Cooper who found Subhana Wrights out of the middle for an enormous kill that tied the set at 14-14.  A serving error, however, put the match back in the Steels' hands.  After a quick serve receive adjustment by Coach Martins,  Amy Cooper put up a playable ball to Subhana Wrights who proceeded to set Kareemah Muhammad for a kill to tie the set at 15 again.  Yet again, Colon, filling in for Goodson, stepped up and delivered a tough serve that forced the Steels into an out of system attack and an error.  Colon delivered on the next serve as well with a short serve that was not returnable and the wounded Eagles escape with their first hard-fought victory of the season.

Congratulations to the team, the captains for stepping up in the big points of the match and top Taisha Colon for 2 critical serves under an exceptionally pressured situation.

The Eagles will now look to heal and prepare for a quad match next Saturday, September 8th, at Bryn Athyn.

EAGLES FALL TO THE RED HAWKS IN OPENER

CSE's Screaming Eagles opened the 2012 campaign with a tough match versus the Red Hawks of Montclair State University.  CSE and MSU traded points early, unable to get a consistent transition game.  The Red Hawks started to slowly establish that part of the game first and jumped out to a 10-5 lead.  The Eagles started to find their transition game as well and behind the tough serving of Captain Amy Cooper, the Eagles edged back to within 1 at 12-11.  In a set of momentum waves, the Red Hawks took the next wave and began to pull away late, racing out to a 20-16 lead.  The Eagles could not recover and after a few errors on their part, MSU sealed the set at 25-17.

Set 2 started off fast for the Eagles.  CSE took a 4-1 lead early but MSU recovered their poise after a timeout and went on a 12-2 run which was fueled by numerous Eagle offensive miscues. the Red Hawks kept up the pressure and extended the lead to 19-12 before the Eagles were able to mount a rally.  Led by Katie Cooper in the front row, the Eagles crawled back to within 3 at 23-20 but could come no closer as the Red Hawks got a kill out of the middle and an ace to close out the set.

The Eagles fell behind early in the 3rd set and were unable to mount a serious threat to the Red Hawks.  CSE fell behind 11-2 due to service and passing errors and were unable to bridge that 9 point gap even though the match was fairly even from that point on.  At 21-13, the Red Hawks looked to be poised to wrap up the set and match when the Eagles went on a mini 3-0 run and pulled within 5.  The Eagles could not generate any more consistent offense as the team fell into the passing woes of the earlier part of the set and bowed out at 25-16.

The Eagles took on Culinary Institute in the afternoon match to try to even up their record.
