The second match for CSE on Saturday was against host College of New Rochelle. The Eagles were looking to get their second win of the day against the Holy Angels who had lost a tough 5 set match to King's College earlier in the day.
The match began very evenly for both teams and the set was filled with errors on both sides as neither team could pull away early. The service game was nearly perfect again (22/24) as the Eagles hit for 4 aces in the process and that proved to be the main difference in the set. Amy Cooper ran a balanced offense getting 9 kills from 4 different players and added 3 aces as the team pulled away late for a comfortable 25-14 set victory.
Although the Holy Angels eliminated many of the hitting and serving errors they suffered through in the first set, CSE was nearly perfect at the outset of the second set and took a commanding 10-4 lead behind the hitting and blocking of Subhana Wrights. Wrights led the Eagle offense with 5 kills and a .333 hitting percentage while combining with Amy Cooper for 2 blocks in the run. CNR fought back to within 2 at 14-12 but a key kill by Katie Cooper gave the Eagles the ball back and following another kill by K.Cooper, CSE had reestablished a 4 point lead again. This proved to be decisive as the teams traded points after that with CSE leading 20-16 late. CNR could not get gain any momentum as key kills by K.Cooper, Ireyiah Stevens and Kareemah Muhammad sealed the set at 25-20.
The final set saw an Eagle offense that just simply overwhelmed the Holy Angels. Kareemah Muhammad, Subhana Wrights and Katie Cooper combined for 13 kills out of 26 attempts with only 4 errors to pace what was a dominant performance by the team. K.Cooper led the way with 7 kills and a .250 hitting percentage while Amy Cooper yet again led the way from the service line with another 2 aces. CSE opened up the set behind Amy Cooper's serving on a 10-3 run and never looked back as they closed out the set and the match 25-18.
The Eagle's improved to a program best 6W-2L to open the 2012 campaign and look to continue their 4 game winning streak against York College on Wednesday, September 19th at home (7pm).
